Premium Kerosene for Oil Boilers and Range Cookers

Premium kerosene is standard heating oil with a performance additive mixed in. It helps keep burners, fuel lines and oil tanks cleaner, and it's the grade we recommend for Agas and other oil-fired range cookers. What Is Premium Kerosene?

It starts as the same 28-second kerosene (BS 2869 Class C2) that most oil boilers run on. Our driver adds a measured dose of additive at the point of delivery, so it mixes into your tank as the oil goes in. A typical premium additive combines several ingredients:

• Detergents that help stop carbon building up on nozzles and burners.
• Dispersants that break up the sludge that settles at the bottom of oil tanks.
• Stabilisers and antioxidants that slow down the way kerosene ages while it sits in the tank.
• Corrosion inhibitors that help protect steel tanks and fuel system parts.

Premium Kero Boiler or Premium Kero Cooker?

Premium Kero Boiler is designed for pressure-jet boilers, the type used in most oil central heating systems.

Premium Kero Cooker is made for range cookers such as Agas and Rayburns. Many oil-fired cookers use vaporising burners, which are more sensitive to fuel quality than boilers and more prone to carbon build-up.

If your cooker and boiler draw from the same tank, choose Premium Kero Cooker. It suits both appliances.

Is Premium Kerosene Worth It?

The premium grade is priced slightly higher than standard kerosene, so it's fair to ask if you really need it. Here's our honest view.

Where it makes the biggest difference

• Oil-fired range cookers, especially older vaporising models that soot up between services.
• Older boilers, or boilers that have had nozzle or burner problems in the past.
• Tanks with a history of sludge, water or filter blockages.
• Oil that sits in the tank for a long time, such as in a holiday let, a second home or a house with low oil use.

When standard kerosene is usually enough

A modern, regularly serviced boiler that gets through its oil fairly quickly will usually run well on standard kerosene. If that describes your system, premium is a choice rather than a necessity. No additive replaces a proper service or fixes a fault, so if your boiler keeps locking out, book an engineer first.

Switching to Premium Kerosene

There's nothing to change on your boiler, cooker or tank. Premium kerosene blends with the oil already in your tank, so you don't need to run it low first. Just ask for Premium Kero Boiler or Premium Kero Cooker when you order, and the driver will dose the delivery.

Keep Up With Servicing

Premium kerosene works best alongside regular maintenance. We recommend having an oil-fired cooker serviced every six months and a boiler every twelve months by an OFTEC-registered technician. Our domestic heating oil page has more on tank care and storage.

How much more does premium kerosene cost than standard?

It costs a little more per litre, because of the additive. Prices change daily, so call 01666 862 100 for today's price on both grades and you can compare them before you order.

Can I put premium kerosene in a tank that already has standard kerosene in it?

Yes. Premium kerosene mixes with the oil that's already there, and there's no need to empty or run down the tank before your delivery.

My Aga and boiler share one oil tank. Which grade should I order?

Order Premium Kero Cooker. It's formulated for the vaporising burners found in many range cookers, and it's also suitable for your boiler.

Will premium kerosene make my boiler more efficient?

It helps keep the nozzle and burner clean, and a clean burner runs closer to its designed efficiency than a sooted one. How much difference you notice depends on the age and condition of your boiler, so we don't promise a fixed saving.

Will premium kerosene fix a boiler that keeps cutting out?

No. Lockouts can have many causes, from a blocked filter to a faulty part. Get an OFTEC-registered engineer to find and fix the problem. Premium kerosene can then help prevent some fuel-related problems coming back.
